Appearance: Atem is approximately five feet six inches tall (on a good day, hair up). His trademark would have to be either his penchant for leather clothing, or most definitely his hair. His hair is gravity-defying by nature, but this does not mean it fails to flatten or get extremely messy when wet or put through an entourage of movement from sleeping. It's spiked and triangular, with blonde lightening bolt shaped bangs, some pieces frame his face, and some spike through the rest of his hair. The second color in his hair is black and the color in back is a light maroon. His eyes are crimson (after his decision to stay in the world, to differentiate with Yuugi, his eyes turned crimson instead of staying violet). He is lean, and not particularly muscular. He no longer wears his Sennen Item [in AU].



Personality: Atem is a person who follows logic in most situations. Since from a very early age he was born into the Egyptian Hierarchy- he learned how to command armed forces and how to go about war; his brain now functions as step-by-step processes. Although he is very head-strong, and he will never give up. Even when faced with the most toughest of challenges he will always look for the light. For all of his good traits though, he becomes extremely hot headed in extremely stressful situations. Sometimes his ego can get the best of him, and even though he's learned to lean on his friends, he forgets and often does not want to burden them.

He is kind, warm, and very friendly, but a little shy at first greetings. He likes to gauge his opponents and new rivals before opening his mouth. He is very easygoing, and can adapt to most situations with ease.[AU] As he's learning to spread his new proverbial wings, he's become eager to try many new things that he's never had a chance to before. His wonder with life at times can almost be summed up as a newborn looking outside for the very first time.

Now, though, his connection to Yuugi has been cut. Without his reincarnation's innocence to guide him, he could at any time fall back into that which he once was- blood thirsty, angry, vengeful, and a little insane.

History: Atem's first steps on earth were in Egypt, many many years ago. Born to the Pharaoh Aknamkanon and his wife Samira, Egypt's chosen son was welcomed by all. A few years before his birth, his father's younger twin brother, Akhenaden, led a siege on the village of Kul Elna. Killing 99 residents in a blood ritual, he created the Sennen items. The only child to escape the bloodshed that night was Akefia Bakura who would later come back to threaten Atem's reign.

When Atem's father found out how the items were made, in his grief and repentance he took his own life, praying to the Gods to spare his son from his mistakes. Atem was hoisted to the throne early because of these actions, unsure and unsteady, but still willing to try. However, it did not take long for Akefia to make his reprise, having made a pact with Zorc Necrophades, he comes after Atem. His blame is placed on the entire royal family, and wishes nothing but for their deaths. In trying to collect the Sennen Items created, he finally calls Zorc to the human realm. Atem battles the monster with all of his strength, but cannot win out in the end. Doing the only thing he can think of, he seals Zorc into the Sennen Ring, and using the last bit of his own power, sentences his own soul to the same fate. He decides in his last few breaths that his name will become the keystone for releasing Zorc; so it is erased from every scroll and from history forever.

His soul then split, the part locked in the puzzle wiped of any memories whatsoever, making sure that his name was to never be released. However another piece came to rest in his tomb, watching over the lands and waiting for the day when someone would solve the trials of his resting place to take the puzzle to where destiny decided it should be. The man who did just this, and subsequently was saved by Atem's soul, was Sugoroku Mutou.

Three thousand years later, Atem became almost reborn again when a boy by the name of Yuugi solved his puzzle. Their souls automatically linked, and he became not only a partner to the boy, but a protector. At first, all his memories of the past, as well as his own name of course, were completely blank. It became clear at that time, that fighting to the future was the only way to bring him back to where he belonged.

Though they faced many hard trials getting there. Eventually things became a little clearer as the two walked hand in hand. Atem learned that he was Pharaoh of Egypt, and he learned of the evils that threatened his people's way of life, the entire world; took them before their time. He was convinced that it was in his own right to fix the situation. He trudged on, even when faced with losing the life of his newly found friends, and in the end, he won out. But the battle did not end there. As he was supposed to depart from Yuugi, they both had a lesson only the other one could teach. For Atem, this was how to lose. In his heated trials and games, every time someone important was on the line, he still tried to push through to a victorious gain. In all of those instances, his tie with Yuugi was harshly cut. It was just something that never occurred to him- losing could be winning as well. With all of these trials faced, he was finally ready to depart from the mortal world. The only way for his soul to be released was to be defeated in battle. And as he faced his last challenge with Yuugi, he learned how to lose with a smile. Yuugi finally set him free in the last blow of the battle, showing him that losing was the key to his freedom.

[AU]As Atem was ready to step into the doors of the spirit world and rekindle all the friendships of the past, he declined. He asked the Gods for a second chance at life, a life he had never gotten to live. They were hesitant, but his urgings convinced them that perhaps he was right. So the doors shut for the final time, and Atem walked free from the temple, born a new man.

Special Abilities: He has a decent amount of knowledge in fighting. He certainly is not a master of martial arts or anything, but he can protect himself if need be. He has retained his knowledge of sword fighting from his time as Pharaoh. He is also an expert at horse riding. [AU] When he gave up his Sennen Puzzle, a tiny bit of Sennen magic was infused within himself, and he gained the ability to heal in small doses. Since he is now the only holder of the last Sennen item, he has gained back his ability to institute Yami no Games (Darkness Games) against anyone that threatens him. If he loses himself to quickly to a situation, other powers have been recognized to come out- those of the lost items.

But there is a flip side to using his powers. At any given usage of his powers he will become weak, dizzy, or even sick afterwards. This is especially bad when one considers that his powers can activate on their own when he is angry, scared, or trying to protect someone. The anchor to these powers is the last Sennen Piece that he carries with him at all times. He can use The Darkness without it- but has been warned that doing so will cause him to lose hold of his own consciousness. This has happened once and only once, and he nearly destroyed himself and Yuugi in the process. Now if he loses this important piece, he has vowed not to use his powers.

The Gods did not want him to leave before his time, so now he ages slower than humans.

Worst Nightmare: Being forced to give up, letting his friends down, and dying. As he refused to go back into the spirit world, he treasures his life here on earth, and any sentiment of dying before he feels it is right, sends him into shut-down mode. He often has dreams of dying, they haunt his very being at times.

But above all else- losing whom he is bound to protect. Should anything happen to Yuugi, I fear for those that caused it.
